Recently, I googled "music" and explored various knowledge sites. It seems that the word "music" came from the word "Muses" that means the daughters of Zues who are advocates of knowledge such as Literature, Geography, Mathematics and, of course, Music. Personally, my passion does include Music. Only yesterday I had a jamming session with a famous local composer, Ahmad Izham Omar. We played some Blues and Rock and Roll alongside the band members of D'Kechewas (Azhar, Iesta, Kamal and Eddy). Our favourite genres may differ but once the band members click together, they produce magic... music magic. As an extension to my love for music, yesterday (also), I bought a brand new electric guitar - an Ibanez SA Series - in dark sexy red. I call her Scarlet Ibanez. Scarlet will share jamming studio with my other acquisitions, Sabrina Gibson and Frieda Fender. These 3 females are the only females that my wife will not be jealous of :)

So, given this passion, I thought I might as well end 2014 with a blog post that is less technical, more cultured, no politics and explores the right side of the brain (mine) that sheldom gets attention. Hence, I would like to share with you my pick on the Top 10 Best Music Albums... the kind where you will like all the songs and not skip tracks. Of course these are biased towards my kind of genre, which is rock. The Top 10s, in no particular order, are:

1. ... and Justice for All - Metallica: Metallica has always been my favourite band. There is no wonder why I start the list with Metallica. To be honest, my favourite album from Metallica is Master of Puppets because of a few songs, namely, Master of Puppets, Orion and Welcome Home (Sanitarium). However, I do skip some songs when I play the album. ... and Justice for All on the other hand, gives me a fuller appreciation of an album. I can just let it play from track 1 till the end. I think this is because, by far, this album showcases the best of musical performance of all the individual musicians in the band. The infamous bass drum beats by Ulrich and the mind blowing chords arrangement by Hetfield just set the benchmark for Heavy Metal. This album was also the debut for their bassist, Newstead.

2. Appetite for Destruction - Guns n' Roses: I grew up in the late 80's and early 90's where Rock and Roll was still strong. At that time hip hop was creeping into the mainstream pop culture and rock was diminishing. The only surviving Rock and Roll bands at that time were Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and Guns n' Roses. This album showcases magnificent Rock and Roll with Slash shocking the world with his awesome Blues scaled solos on the Gibson Les Paul and a music wizard touch for Rock and Roll by Izzy Stradlin, it just makes it a complete shout when Axl clads those songs with his lyrics.

3. Come Hell of High Water - Deep Purple: What can I say? All 80's and 90's rock bands must have had their references from their predecessors. Deep Purple goes deep into influencing many rockers. Not so much of Rock and Roll but what they represented was the epitome evolution into Heavy Metal. The mastermind, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, is a genius. While other guitarist were still exploring the usual Blues scaled Pentatonic on Minor to suit the Rock genre, he was already on an adventure to go beyond those scales and combining other patterns inclusive of arpeggios at a tremendous speed. I salute Blackmore. True enough, when I had my guitar lessons, Deep Purple's solos are some of the toughest to follow. This album is a live recording of a decent selection of their songs.

4. Celebration Day - Led Zeppelin: Enjoying Deep Purple was intense. It gets too technical. When you wanna get out of that zone and just wanna be relaxed, Led Zeppelin offers a soothing easy Blues Rock and Roll feel. It feels good when you can play along the guitar solos with Jimmy Page as his was the usual template. What makes them cool is the grove in each song. It is the kind of Rock that does not demand head banging but a hippie dance.. whatever that means. That is the sort of happiness that Robert Plant can offer to his listeners. Celebration Day is a live recording of a reunion concert of the band members (the dead drummer, Bonham, was replaced by his son). At an old age, they can still perform a mind blowing Rock and Roll saga.

5. The Pulse - Pink Floyd: At one point, I had enough of Heavy Metals and Rock and Rolls. I wanted an alternative source of music appreciation. At that time, alternative meant the Grunge bands like Nirvana. However, I chose to look back. When everyone was hypnotised by Rock and Roll, Pink Floyd was already branching into alternative realm just like how Salvador Dali went into surrealism when other painters were on their tracks for modernist expressionism. This is also a recording of a live concert that has songs from across all of their albums. Floyd's fresh outlook into music brings you to a fantasy journey. You need not move your body to appreciate it. Your mind does all the work. Truly magnificent. Kudos to their main movers Roger Walters and Dave Gilmore.

6. Rubber Soul - The Beatles: Having Izham Omar as my mentor in music cannot depart me away from his favourite band, the Beatles. Their genre may not be within my likings but the relevance of what they contributed to the mushrooming of rock bands across the globe is just phenomenon. Some appreciation are acquired taste. Some required a bit of convincing before you can say, "Ahhh,.. I get it!" So I decided to buy all the albums by the Beatles. My first impression was, wow, Pink Floyd was not the only experimental alternative band of their time, the Beatles was the epitome unprecedented trend changer. You cannot imagine how they can be ahead of their time. Given my taste in genre, I have decided to choose a darker, less fun fair type melodic numbers. Hence Rubber Soul.

7. Ten - Pearl Jam: In the late 90's, many alternative (Grunge) bands emerged. These are the usual 4-chords per song type music with distortions to hide technicalities and sometimes, the bloody guitarists went against the normal convention for guitar string tunning of E-A-D-G-B-E. In that ocean of alternative bands, Pearl Jam made their way up by combining both Grunge and Rock and Roll feel. This way, they captured both youth and matured audiences. It was quite delightful for me to have known about them as they provided a bridge between the old wave (Rock and Roll) and the new (Grunge). So far, Eddie Vedder is my favourite Rock vocalist because his voice offers the depth for songs that comes from a wide spectrum of genre.

8. Live in UK - Helloween: Exploring rock uncovers many sub-genres. You have Rock and Roll for a start. Then Heavy Metal, Black Metal, Grunge Alternative, and there was Speed Metal. Having the melody and the groves were not the only attributes that give you the adrenalin rush. Speed is the new substance for youngsters. Helloween is speed like no other. Their songs are so damn fast and with that crunchy "distortion"ed guitar riffs coupled with their shrieking-voiced vocalist, you are set to fuel your momentum especially when running a marathon. Live in UK is a live recording of a selection of songs from their albums. The reaction of the crowd in that concert, as apparent from the recording, is just overwhelming. People sang along to numbers such as Dr Stein and Future World.

9. Blood Sugar Sex Magic - Red Hot Chilli Peppers: In my quest to diversify my music appreciation (instead of remaining in the myopic world of Rock), Funk was a good chapter to push me to the boundaries but not too far. It was a rewarding journey. I used to practise my drumming to Red Hot Chilli Pepper's songs because their colourful Funk breaks the monotonous structure that Rock had traditionally embedded. Thanks to the drummer, Chad Smith, Red Hot Chilli Peppers managed to secure its position as the leading Funk band. Over its life this band produced many good albums but none ever surpassed the popularity of this album. Every song in this album tells a different musical story but yet all portraying that unique selling proposition of a new age Funk advocate.

10. Son gs of Innocence - U2: U2 is an Irish band that accumulated fan base big enough to challenge Madonna or even Michael Jackson in the 90's. The albums that made them famous were Joshua Tree and, subsequently, Achtung Baby. For me, notwithstanding that my favourite U2 songs are from these 2 albums, I still find myself skipping one or two songs when playing them. This year, 2014, they released their new album, Son gs of Innocence. The album showcases fresh new sounds but yet, unmistakenably U2 predominantly as a result of Bono's voice, that familiar drum beats by Muller and Adam's heartfelt bass lines. The Edge, the guitarist/keyboardist, on the other hand, has matured in song writing producing the most melodic albums I have ever heard. Kudos.
'KECHEWAS had Johan on Bass and Rhythm Guitars, Eddie on Drums, Iesta on Vocals, Izham Omar on Keyboards and Bass, Datuk Kamal on Percussions and Azhar Borhan on Lead Guitars. Our X-Man MZul was absent due to his study leave in the UK for Script Writing. We rocked the stage of Media Prima TV Screenings 2013 like we never did before. We even had special guest playing the bass for us, who else no other than the Media Prima big boss, Dato' Amrin. It was a night to remember. It was aesthetically fun. It was passion burning with the desire and love for music. It was D'Kechewas.
We hit the stage with an opening medley of Red Hot Chilli Peppers' Give It Away, Aerosmith's Walk This Way and a classic from Queen's Under Pressure. The trio medley gave the crowd a reason to stick around head banging like there was no tomorrow to appreciate music. Enough of a punchy opening, the band mellowed down into Every Breath You Take with Dato' Amrin leading the band with his bass lines like Sting himself playing the bass strings.
To light up the night, out of no where, Jacqueline Victor appears driving the crowd nuts and there was nothing else that we could do other than hitting a bluezy number of Give Me One Reason by Tracy Chapman. From the blues, we progressed into rock & roll manifested by Free's All Right Now, of course, still having Jacky on vocals. Jacky's voice was so mesmerising that something had to be done to reinforce that feel..... and with the wisdom of our keyboard wizard, Izham, Jackson 5's I'll Be There filled the air with Jacky's best ever live performance for that night.
The Jacky and GMD (Amrin) session ended full of flavour that it was appropriate to have some local taste to the explosive night. Iesta continued on with Search's Rozana and like Halley's Comet striking the Earth, on the second verse, Amy Search! jumped on board. Bloody'ell.... the owner of the song himself performing it - what an epitome line up! As we all know it, Amy Search is a big fan of the Stones (Rolling Stones),.. and what happened next, was beyond believe. The stage was rockin of Stone's Honky Tonk Women with everyone rollin and rockin. Truly a dream come true for a small jamming band like us.

Next with horns flanking us, we did a number on our signature cover for Wilson Pickett,...... Yes! Mustang Sally! Ride Sally Ride! ... and we were riding Sally all night long, we were. For some reason we've always enjoyed performing Mustang Sally and I think, we will continue to have this song on our list to mark our presence. As usual, Izham vetoed everyone with a song from his favourite band, the Beatles, doing a Twist & Shout and as you may have guessed,... the crowd was doing the Twist!! on the dance floor..... If that is not participation, I don't know what is..... Awesome! An ending with the Beatles have always been successful leaving behind a sweet after taste to the whole set.
The crowd began to shout, "We want more! We want more!". What more can we give? We had done 11 Songs, the most we'd ever done so far. Then we remembered that we used to fool around with some Hendrix in the jamming studio. So,.. Hendrix it is then. Izham abandoned his keyboards and was now grabbing the bass from Johan. Johan had to grab something else - the closest to him was a Gibson Les Paul,.. oh! whadda hell, guitar it is then. And with full of firing inferno, D'Kechewas bazooka'ed the night with Fire. The crowd was chaotic like it was the remake of Woodstock! Fuhh!! Hendrix never failed to crunch that raw feel in you, don't you think so? Everyone was tired and again, some sweet song that everyone can sing along had to be done for the real closing of the night. Surprise, Surprise, another Beatles - Hey Jude ended the concert..... and it was history that we all shall remember forever :)
The band had the same line up as per previous appearance at Hard Rock Cafe Penang last year. As usual, the Sifu, Ahmad Izham Omar, led the band into what is said to be their best performance so far. They chose good songs relevant to the crowd. They modified the song arrangements to be more accomodative of the ambience and, they even added in some "retarts" (odd timing pauses) in between verses and choruses. The vocalists, MZul and Iesta, a magnificent duo, who exchanged jokes in between songs, did so tactfully to the extent that panties were flying in the air onto the stage - pink and black ones to be exact.

The sound was familiar to the crowd where you could see some half-head-bangings happening. Azhar joined Eddy with the riff that only confirms the crowd's anticipation of the song,...... Are You Gonna Go My Way by Kravitz. Shortly, the keyboards, the bass and the percussions filled the air and off went Iesta with the lyrics sounding just as charismatic as Lenny Kravitz, if not better. (Video recording of this song in the U-Tube link below)

....... a concise, simultaneous and forceful strike of the note "C" by the guitars, bass and keyboards, coupled with the drum hit, simply gave a punch to a very rocking song. Kappowwww!

Just as soon as the first song ended, the Drummer went "One, Two, Three......" (Errrr... was it "Two, Three, Four..."?), and the whole band rushed into the intro for Crying by Aerosmith (In the above U-Tube link). The sweet, calm and melodic first few verses of the song sort of stabilised the crowd for a while but the chaotic floor went crazy again the minute Iesta hit the chorus. At one point Iesta pointed to Azhar shouting Azhar's name and that was when, the magnificent solo skills of Azhar manifested itself to the world. Towards the end, the first "retart" was done with Iesta's hand up in the air pausing every band member's urge to hit a note resulting in a total silence enveloping the air. The minute the hand stroke downwards, a concise, simultaneous and forceful strike of the note "C" by the guitars, bass and keyboards, coupled with the drum hit, simply gave a punch to a very rocking song. Kappowwww!

The band took their time to rest a bit while MZul and Iesta entertained the crowd with jokes and prize giving sessions. The band also took the opportunity to clear the stage from having panties lying around (thrown by the crowd). Then it was the time for another song when MZul shouted "We're gonna do a number from Stoooone, Templeeeeeeeee, Pilooooooooots....". The crowd went into the luna mode again when the vocalist, this time MZul, starts the ball rolling for an alternative, grunge and popular song Plush. It was a cool and smooth song that ended with a heartfelt piano playing by Izham.... but,.. it wasn't an "End",.... it was a "Beginning". A beginning to another song - a gimmick Izham loves to do.

The soft piano piece suddenly means a lot to the crowd when MZul started to sing Oasis' Don't Look Back in Anger,... at which point, Johan was already sitting down on the stage's front staircase with his hands up in the air waving left to right and vice versa, only to be followed by the crowd. The soothing verses of the song came to a profound rhythmic composure when all musical instrument started to make sound at the bridge of the song, into the chorus. The song ended with Izham's beautiful piano playing again except that this time, it was the true ending with no gimmicks. To set the stage for what was to come afterwards, three additional musicians came onto the stage carrying a trombone, a saxaphone and a trumpet.

Izham started the piano/keyboards with a soulful rhythm and shortly, drums and bass kicked in with the horns flanking the motion. The sound was a familiar one (to those who were there at Hard Rock Cafe Penang previously) and Iesta's words only confirmed it when he went "Mustang Sallyyyy...... " (A song by Wilson Picket). Iesta, MZul and Johan moved their bodies to the grove while Dato Kamal's voice can be heard for backing vocals. The entire band participated extraordinarily on this one as most of them seem to claim that this is their signature cover song (as naturally earmarked at Hard Rock Cafe Penang). To mark the special status, Izham had the horns section from the band (Audrey's) that performed earlier during the TV Screenings to join us. To add the gimmick, we had a "retart" on this one! The second Iesta reached "Now you come around, signifying a woman baby.....", the entire band went silence until he continued "you won't, you won't let me ride.. Mustang Sally...", the band rushed in at "Sally".

Next was MZul's dancing session. Mzul declared "I feel I wanna dance" and the band went funky with Prince's Kiss. Somewhere in the middle of the song MZul and Iesta did some "Piccadilly" dance moves but as usual, MZul couldn't resist dancing with the girls on the floor. He jumped down from the stage and started dancing with the crowd. Guess what, another "retart"!!! but this time, MZul took his time. It was a long silence until he went "Women not,..." at which point, Eddy struck the snare and the whole band was in action again.

The last number had to be Izham's choice. The leader chooses the finale. It is from his favourite band, The Beatles. The song was most appropriate to close the occasion with dignity, satisfaction and joy (except that the bassist suffered the most given the fast pace running bass for the entire song). D'Kechewas closed the night with I Saw Her Standing There.
I am sure he is (Idol) for most of you who appreciate guitars. I don't intend to write much on this post. All I want to share is the below list... a Top 10 list for the greatest guitarists by Rolling Stone (2011). It is no surprise that Hendrix is at the top of the list. Why? Well, my personal opinion is that: Hendrix revolutionarised guitar playing to an unprecedented level. He made guitar solo and vocals to co-exist as the body of a song simultaneously rather than having guitar solos as a distinct section of a song arrangement. He trancended Rock and Roll and Blues to a more dignified status, but his (genre), is a signature that no one can ever recreate without plagiarising his tunes. He is the founder of Freakish-Blues. Truly a Legend. Hail Hendrix!

The meeting was meant to be a discussion about how to make money in music but it turned out to be a history class. It was quite gratifying to uncover how music had evolved from a mono note sound to the various genres we hear today. He was very fast and for that, I may have not recorded his teachings accurately. So, if I make any errors in this blog post, it must be because of my lack of shorthand skills rather than his miseducation. Being a music lover myself, getting tuitioned from a very well known composer like Izham is truly a chance of a life time that means a lot. So, to all of you music lovers out there, I would like to share with you "The Brief History of Music":

THE BRIEF HISTORY OF MUSIC

The Beginning

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 127px; height: 123px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1927EBQDnMSFe1ykPvSchIxDlrvmjSKigMabP1RUGIaujcQjmBMQMRKaKPFjLzwaxkRQKBJtnJTogLz_eNmgfqbhks9Ugrwhj1nH29UYR2HqFrRAoAfR-jMHg9bdxN4gb0a-gBngG1jw/s400/Gregorian+Notation.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5592871310321689650" />In the beginning, music was nothing other than mono notes being sustained. During the Gregorian era, multiple notes were introduced, and there was "Harmony". This is believed to be the start of writing music on paper, ie. music notations. I did some research on this Gregorian era and found the below at wiki.answers.com

There are arguments concerning the proper use of the term "Gregorian" in reference to chants. Generally the term refers to any chants written in the church modes, often employing texts from the psalms or the gospels. They developed during the papacy of Gregory the Great (d.604) but generally refer to the Church music of the 11th through 13th centuries. The Gregorian chant contained phrases that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye often in the form of arches. Musical strains were often related to the text in the context of the contours of the musical line and what the text is addressing.
The Classical Era

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 108px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOej3YvCePUoORxnO7DnBCpYhwYbc2emG2-DOZFlV0QsnPwvI_KXbe3VevgNwRObUAatjLDssivn-29lqB3gD1hoC9n8H8dnWXr2-vQN-D4ufMvftAgu3bn7AT79fCH8VkZaFQHN8Nx4M/s400/Bach.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5592871994190176594" />Gregorian music evolved into Classical music. This is when names such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven came to light. They were the pioneers of Baroque music that was classified as Classical. Back then it was considered weird (or even diabolic), but of course, it gained popularity later against the ancient folk music. Baroque means extravagant, complex or bizarre. Yup, "Bizarre". Subsequently, a genius by the name of Richard Wagner emerged with theatrette expression sounds - the sounds in movies that enforce feelings of what is intended (Example, the scarry sound in horror movies). But of course during Wagner's time, the 1800's, it was the operas rather than movies.

The Band Era

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 127px; height: 96px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj63NMx8o4jDMqjAoUf4ZnRQBI75Uc03R2apPb9le6v3M7KDLrtXCanNopbrEPpKmRtiPUa9OwDG-63QObi8DT4abfVbslfOhkj2BdrbaH40XcMXcDox32zlkTeUtBRwhsgOW6N04yhRw/s400/Marching+Bands.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5592878502469302770" />Classical music later evolved into Marching Bands which used mostly percussion and wind instruments. It was originally used in the military as troops marched from one location to another. Marching Bands then evolved into Swing Bands. Swing uses a strong rhythm section of double bass and drums as the anchor for a lead section of brass instruments such as trumpets and trombones, woodwinds including saxophones and clarinets, and sometimes stringed instruments such as violin and guitar, medium to fast tempos, and a swing time rhythm. This is when name like Louis Armstrong and the whole bunch of musicians from New Orleans emerges. They call it Dixieland, a style of instrumental music associated with New Orleans and characterised by a relatively fast two-beat rhythm and by group and solo improvisations. Naturally, my next sentence would be ".... and there was Jazz". Dizzy Gillespie being one of the pioneers of Jazz and Charlie Parker took Jazz further into Bebop, a jazz style emphasising aggressive, energetic playing, especially rapid and difficult chord change. Of course Jazz also did evolve on its own into Acid Jazz and Electric Jazz Fusion like that preached by Chick Corea.

The Vocals Era

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 101px; height: 127px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvERVIhkrODK9H5XLCdqO5GkpJnj4HHEIhTNvazP8eKnI_ytymnJWw8RH1DVT4bZQwiqFtYyKSzRScDJEZh7unjw0B656ZDjERtMRqOMXhUZmqi1ZiM940JD5aA-qlLyeKfYr1NGbdD5E/s400/Elvis+Presley.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5592880697159861810" />Returning back to Swing, it did not only gave birth to Jazz. There were also other derivatives of Swing that set the foundations of the modern day music. They are Blues and Crooners. Crooners tends to highlight the importance of vocals. Human voice(s), which was initially "rhythm" in nature (eg. choir in church), had now received the world's attention. One of the famous crooners is Frank Sinatra. Many came after him but one Crooner who significantly change the world's acceptance from a slow tempo to an up tempo music is none other than the King, Elvis Presley. His unique performance that introduced the element of "glam" and rushing tempo earned him the title King of Rock and Roll. The "glam" bit was the catalyst for the emergence of Disco type genre which of course, now evolved into a more stable genre known as Pop. Some other significant genres that emerged from vocal-centric music would be Hip Hop (eg. Will Smith) and New Wave (eg. Duran Duran).

...and all hell broke loose

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 113px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvOFz0UTnqXevQD3kVlcYq9rjL36zdhVA8A5Y2Pdsd2bfRqUUC-0z5Qt1dLWstlsaAvSh18tKtYbkvXlJMwYyl0nrfeZP4CW4I5mjCnYwZJugDq97W6sIQYbUbI4y8LvWhCOBVpKpSnE4/s400/The+Beatles.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5592884266102878946" />As you may very well know, Elvis was the start of Rock via his Rock and Roll gift to humanity. However, it wasn't him who broke the hell loose for Rock music. The Beatles came down to Earth from the sky and opened the flood gate to offsprings of Rock genre to an unprecedented level. The widespread of new sub-derivatives of Rock simply came to existence at biblical proportion. You have Blues (that came from Swing Band) with names like John Lee Hooker and B.B. King, whose influence is merged with Rock, magically producing fantastic musicians/bands like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Dire Straits and of course the guitar legend, Jimi Hendrix.

Rock was then broken into pieces like broken glasses. It can have a very profound impact to your spiritual well being. When the notes and melodies of a solo piece touches your heart, and at that point you close your eyes, you know that that aesthetic appreciation has transcended your awareness of existence to a dream land where nothing else matters other than the music in your soul. It is as if you found God. Remember that moment when you sip your black coffee after a long and tiring day? Remember that sweetness of water when the sun sets and you break your fast? Remember that last puff of ciggarettes when yhou decided to quit? Remember that first making of love when you lost your virginity? Well, that's what I'm talking about. Pure blissfulness enveloped by the goodness of life. I hate to extend this poetic thoughts further. To cut short, why not I share the most influential guitar solos, at least those that have a long lasting heartfelt scar on my musical soul. They are, not in any particular order:

<img style="float:right; Izham had an idea of forming a band of musicians who did not end up becoming musicians in life but still holds the passion for music - hence "D'Kechewas" which means "The Disappointed". It's a "dream finally reached" kind of feel, well, short of being perceived as "midlife crisis". No, no, don't be negative - It is a "dream finally reached" for me at least.

Izham is a musician but most of the time, he is (was) a CEO of 8TV. So if you want to say that he is not a musician per se, you can,... but then again, he just won the best album of the year 2009 under Anugerah Industri Muzik for Faizal Tahir's Adrenalin. Let's just assume that he spends 90% of his time as a CEO rather than a music composer - so ya, Izham in not a musician - I must be stupid to say this when he was the founder of Positive Tone.

Azhar Borhan is an Otai. Very experienced in the entertainment industry involving music but not quite a musician by profession himself. He is the GM for Content Development in Malaysia's largest TV content creation company, Primeworks Studios. He may have been one of the main man behind introducing Sheila Majid to the world but yah, "per se", again, let's just assume he is not a musician coz I see him in his office most of the time browsing thru his Mac.

M. Zulkifli has one confused career path history. This dude started of as a magistrate kicking asses into jails and what not and suddenly, like Moses after the burning fire of bushes, changes everything. He became editor for FHM, Malay Mail and some other publication, and later appears at 7am on TV as the host for Malaysia Hari Ini ("MHI"). MHI is just a cover up,.. actually, he is a nerd in the office doing whatever it is he does as the GM for Content for tonton.com.my and gua.com.my,..... and the soon to come, guava.com.my

Eddy is an arty farty guy... never heard him fart before but yeahh, he is an arts guy. As the Director of Arts, he produces images, adverts, whatever it is that you may call artistic or aesthetic (or at least in his mind) for clients of TV3, TV9, 8TV and ntv7. I heard a rumour that he does have a blues band performing in some bar but all I can remember about him is "the guy who creates TV advertisements". He even decided to advertise some products on his skin in a tatoo format. Cool guy.

Then there is me, Johan. As briefly described earlier, Izham, M. Zul, Azhar and Eddy do have some significant touch in their life that relates to music,.. but me, hmmmm, what can I say? I'm a bloody accountant for the past 14 years and will continue to be so for the next 14 years before someone manages to convince me to earn money via Network 21 of Amway. The one proud thing I can say is, as the GM of Finance Media Prima, I look after the money from the businesses that Izham, Azhar, M. Zul and Eddy manages.

There is another person, Iesta. A guest member who proved himself worthy of being called musician when he started to yell to the top of his lungs at Hard Rock Cafe Penang gig. This dude is the GM of Corporate Affairs for Primework Studios. Not sure whether he manages the "affairs" in the office but he is (well he thinks it's a "was" rather than "is") a bloody accountant as well.

So Izham had all these dudes, including him, to start jamming at various studios, mostly being Black Brown Blue Studio (not sure the arrangement of which colour comes first or next but it's BBB basically) in Hartamas and Akarkarya Studio (Acis-Sheila's) at Uptown Damansara. We were destined to perform at a Media Appreciation Night attended by all sorts of media people (Media "characters" more like it) as well as for an internal function for Media Prima at Hard Rock Cafe Penang. To date, I have not managed to get the video for the Media Appreciation Night but I did get some shots for the Hard Rock Cafe Penang gig as documented in my blog post D'Kechewas mustanged the night at Hard Rock Cafe

Yeahh, so that is D'Kechewas with the latest line up as below (This line up is not the original, there were some dudes who left earlier):

Keyboards: Izham (Captain)
Vocals and Guitar: M. Zul
Guest Vocals: Iesta
Lead Guitar: Azhar
Drums: Eddy
Bass: Johan

For a while we were quite frequent in these jamming sessions but it has since slowed down. I had a quick chat with Izham last night after buka puasa and we will, soon, re-commence, this "finally reached dream" - for a start, we can always do the usuals first before trying new songs - just to kick start the engines - our usuals are as listed below:

Mustang Sally - Wilson Picket

It is quite an experience to be back in jamming mood and mode. The last time I really had a jam streak was probably 14 years ago when I was in a Malaysian student band performing for the Malam Merdekas type functions in Melbourne Australia. So now, I have also started to jam with my long lost Australian band members as listed in my blog post Prelude. D'Kechewas is not meant to be a recording band but it allows people like me to live (or re-live) my passion in life. As a result, I have enrolled myself for guitar solo classes that I go every Sunday morning under the guidance of the #20 ranking guitar teacher in Malaysia, Saudara Rockers Hasnol (not sure which band he comes from).

I must thank my fellow D'Kechewas for having the trust in me playing the bass guitar although I am the most inexperienced of the lot. Somehow Izham felt that I am worthy of it - Thanks Boss. Also special thanks to Seelan Paul for promoting us at Hard Rock Cafe Penang and also to Datuk Kamal and Eliza who were the backup vocals at Hard Rock Cafe. To close this post, I would also like to thank The Edge for covering D'Kechewas,... well they didn't really covered D'Kechewas,.. it was actually covering Ahmad Izham Omar but Izham decided to revolve the interview around D'Kechewas given that the title of the article is "after hours" as extracted below:
But nevermind. The intention was Mr Hudson. Mr Saul "Slash" Hudson. At 44 he still looks youthful with his curly long hair, muscular hands, tight jeans, Lagen boots, various silvers on the neck and wrists, bloody ciggy in the mouth, Stallone's sunnies, hankerchief tugged in the back butt pocket and the iconic top hat with some belt like decor from some cheap girlie costume jewellery shop. Awesome. Inspirational. This man, a mix of Black daddy and Caucasian mom, is probably like what Kennedy was for Abraham Lincoln, but him for Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix religionised Freakish Blues. Slash made Rock n' Roll Blues immortal.

Of course as promotion to his debut album under the name Slash, he played songs from the Slash album. What makes it unique with the sound that Slash produces is that melancholic touch that gave blues a feel that not only rocks your head for banging, but pushes your soul to enlightenment; almost like getting high without even smoking a bong. That unique sound, it seems, according to Slash, can only be created from a Gibson Les Paul (or Epiphone Les Paul) that is plugged into a Marshall Amp. Priceless. You gotto get one of those. The dudes that night were probably a bit lost when the band was playing numbers from Velvet, Snakepit and the Debut album, but when the Guns n' Roses tunes were up, we were shouting like no tomorrow. Long forgotten lyrics of Night Train, My Michelle, Paradise City, Rocket Queen and Civil War suddenly came out flowing like rivers of Babylon filling the air with the voices of satisfied middle age hearts (the target market of the so called Otai Sinar FM). The zenith was when that peculiar lick for intro suddenly came out of the Sunburst Les Paul followed by a familiar bass line: The crowd started to sing ".... Ooooo Sweet Child O' Mine......"

Recently I read a blogpost of a friend entitled My Top 10 Favourite Hard Rock Songs Of The 80s. Whilst some of his choice earned my concurrence, I'd rather spread the list to cover 70's and 90's as well coz the spectrum of Rock really progressed over those 3 decades covering many cool bands whose names remain as iconic idols for the modern day rockers. Hence, my list of Top 10, of course may not be to your liking but worthy of being shared nonetheless:

No wonder why the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne conferred him an honorary doctorate for his contribution to human civilisation via his soothing easy listening rock and roll and melodious tunes that captures the hearts of many. His was a more wide spread acceptable rock style which had its appeal to non rockers as well. As the lead guitarist and the vocalist of Dire Straits, really, he has put the band on par with many others, some of which listed below. Whilst my music inclination was somewhat influenced by Dire Straits, it wasn't hard enough to my liking, although I must admit, those late night drives back home from work was maintained within an acceptable level of sanity by this song.

He transends all Glamorous Rockers. No one have I seen has managed to potray glam rock to that level yet still managed to hold the attention of rockers of all time. Whilst rockers are often homophobic, they'll probably still accept Mercury. Me and my band tried to jam this song once - yup, you've guessed it - total disaster. The song is full of weird arrangements with variety of riffs and licks and timed at weird intervals and what not. You name it. Mercury made this song into a jigsaw puzzle for jammers. And of course, the lyrics caught everyone's attention with its imfamous "Mama Mia" and the ever controversial "Bismillah We Will Not Let You Go"

I grew up in the mid to late eighties when rock and roll was progressively transforming into heavy metal. There were many off shoots of heavy metal such as black metal, thrash etc but one subset caught my attention, ie. speed metal. These dudes in Halloween was super fast. This song in particular carried a unique attractiveness as it is alien in its content - a song on some sort of Frankenstein saga coupled with the speed metal riffs that set a higher benchmark for followers of speed metal. When I was abroad, I roamed all over the world to look for the particular CD that made this song famous, ie Halloween Live in UK. I looked for it for 10 bloody years in Australia, US, Malaysia and UK but finally managed to get hold of it in eBay, an old CD but the sound is still of good quality.

Who was in this band? Well, the greatest guitarist of all time after the death of Hendrix, Mr Yngwie Johann Malmsteen, who, by the way, adores Hendrix like mad and even uses a Fender Stratocaster like Hendrix, ie cream and white and shit. This song was "the" song that introduced Malmsteen to the eyes of the world. This swedish bastard reinvented classical music in a hard rock presentation with his speechless arpeggio of notes. I started learning how to play the guitar because I was in love with many rock songs but I started to "really" play guitar solo after listening to Malmsteen's inferno charge of rush from his heartfelt guitar solos. Not to mention me and him, yea,.. me AND HIM, share the same name except that his has an extra "N" - Bloody Swedes!

When I was old enough to appreciate music, there were only 3 surviving rock and roll bands - Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and Guns'n'Roses - although Deep Purple was still around but they were not that active. Naturally, the youngest and the coolest of the 3, ie G'N'R, won my heart. Slash, the lead guitarist of the band, was the reason why I did not follow the foot steps of Hendrix and Malmsteen in appreciating Fenders. Slash, in his own revelationised and revolutionised introductory solo lick for Sweet Child O' Mine opened my heart to Gibson Les Paul. I've tried that piece on many guitars but never can you get that fantastic sound by Slash other than on a Les Paul. So I bought a Gibson Les Paul to be my 3rd wife after my 1st human wife and my Ibanez RG Series. By the way, got tickets for Slash concert this 5th August 2010,.. yeeehaaaaaa!

So I started listening to the grandfathers of hard rock. These granfathers, well, they really know how to create riffs that sticks in your head forever. Who can ever forget the introductory riffs to Smoke on the Water? That riff is the elementary piece for guitar beginners who are exploring rock chords rhythm (ie, the two or three string progression of chords in forming songs) - Simply superb arrangement by Deep Purple's lead guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore. I once went to Deep Purple's concert in Genting and blimmey, I realised that how Guns'n'Roses is to me, Deep Purple is to some old timer such as the CEOs of leading plcs in Malaysia. You see all these high profile Malaysian corporate figures listening to Deep Purple! So indeed, the era of 70's hippie rock was the main stream of that time.

Slash made me buy Gibson Les Paul. Deep Purple made me appreciate rock chords rhythm progression. Guess what Led Zeppelin did to me? Well, guitar plucking has never been manifested thoroughly as effective as the plucking for Stairway to Heaven. Until today, whenever I tune my guitars, I will always test the plucking of the verses in Stairway to Heaven - superb way of expressing A minor with the progression of bass-like running notes on the 4th string coupled with an epitome ending of alternative notes at 1st string to complete the plucking of the chord - not an expert in describing how it is played but that is my interpretation - I am sure it's not A minor all the way but it has to be variations of the A minor family. Anyways, yeahh, Stairway to Heaven, a classic example of a song that starts with a calm composition, inviting bridges and ends with chaotic distortioned rock-jumping riffs coupled with the superb solo by Jimmy Page, the band's lead guitarist.

No one was ever in his category and none after him ever fit into it either. His was a unique one. He calls it "Freakish Blues". Whilst he has many freakish blues songs, Little Wing's blues has an attractiveness to it that mesmerised many guitarists. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Malmsteen, Satriani, Vai and many more did their versions of Little Wing but hey, Hendrix delivered the best. His was not too hard not too mellow. A soothing song with a twist of freakish blues and a feel that came from his heart suitably played from his infamous Fender Stratocaster. Today, jammers still do this song from various instruments, mainly guitars and the keyboards. Musicians of today have somewhat accepted Hendrix approach in guitar expression to be the prophesized revelation of blues. The modern hard rock and rock and roll evolved from blues anyway - so why not appreciate the roots?

But if I was ever asked a question "If you are given a choice to only choose 1 CD not to be taken away from you or destroyed, which CD will that be?" The answer is Pink Floyd - Pulse. This is a recording of their concert and mind you, Another Brick in the Wall never failed to entertain me whenever we (my band) jam this song in the studio. Simply superb. I play the bass so this song, naturally, is close to my heart coz the bass, drives this song. I love this song and the chorus "We don't need no education...." is the epitome rebelious statement you can ever think of back in the 70's. I am also proud to announce that I heard this song being played last ever, live by Pink Floyd, on TV from Hyde Park, during the Live8 concert arranged by Bob Geldolf (Is that how you spell his name?). Pink Floyd never did appear in public after that - that was the last - unless they appear again after this blog post.

The number 1 rock song of all time, in accordance with my assessment, is the crunchy hard heavy metal dampened rhythms and macho screamings of Hetfield, the magical and melancholic solo of Hammett, the Black Sabbath influenced drumming by Ulrich and bold bass lines by the lagendary Burton.... Master.... of.... Puppetsssssssssssss............... I have to tell you. Metallica's music arrangement is superb. The crunchy riffs have the speed of Helloween and the melody of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin's heavy expressions. The complication of song arrangement has the sophistication of Bohemian Rhapsody. The middle bit instrumental mellow bridge has the melancholy feel that of Mark Knofler and Pink Floyd. The guitar solos have a dark character to it like the classical arpeggio of Malmsteen and the freakish Hendrix. And of course, if G'N'R has a stage presence for being a glam rock band, Metallica storms the stage like no other heavy metal bands have done - which makes them worthy of carrying the name "METAL"lica to represent the heavy metal population. If you've noticed for No. 10 to No.2 above, I have somewhat revealed how those songs (and bands) influenced my music inclination. How did Metallica influenced me? Well, in short, Metallica is the pandora box of rock to me. Without Metallica, I'd probably end up being a fan of some un'cool' types of music like those by Pet Shop Fuckin Boys or that geek Rick Astley. Thank God God opened my eyes to rock tunes!

There are other cool songs for which if mentioned, you may not be familiar (the likes of Kashmir by Led Zeppelin or even Child in Time by Deep Purple),.. and there are also other bands and musicians who do produce fantastic rock songs but when limited to Top 10, they are not mentioned (such as Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Carlos Santana, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, Pearl Jam, Kromok, Sepultura, Ozzy Osborne and Black Sabbath, Tesla, Eric Clapton and the Cream, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, Scorpion, The Police, Live, Eagles, Van Hallen, Def Leppard, Montley Crue, Loudness, AC~DC, Rainbow, Black Crows, ... and the list goes on forever).

There was nothing that could have stopped them. Even Faizal Tahir and his band was forced to take up the sits on the upper floor. General public and families were squeezed to use tables at the edge of the broad space in front of the stage.
I am Seelan Paul. It gives me great pleasure to present to you the band whom didn't want their names to be mentioned because they were afraid they may "kechewa" all of you. We have Azhar from PWS. Johan from Finance. Eddie from CSD. Iesta from PWS... and of course him who does not need introduction, Ahmad Izham Omar, our Head of Radio...". At this point Faizal Tahir was screaming something to Izham from the upper level... and all Izham could reply was "I Love You", his phrase of the month after having said the same thing when winning the Anugerah Industri Music award for best album for Faizal, "Adrenalin".
D'Kechewas, even without their usual vocalist, M. Zul, started rocking with Iesta on the microphones with his husky voice calling out "Mustang Saaaalllllyyyyyyy......" flanked by Eliza and Dato' Kamal on backing vocals. Swift strokes of Izham's keyboards coupled with Eddy's intense drum beats and heart pounding bass by Johan, could only make the Media Prima gang rock the night out as Azhar fills the air with the best blues guitar riffs.

It wasn't enough with just the blues jam. D'Kechewas continued with the evergreen Every Breath You Take with Azhar on the original infamous guitar picking of The Police's mind soothing arpeggio.

Eager to proceed to a more relaxed jamming session in the hotel room, the band then embarked on their last song for the night (or so they thought). The Beatles' I Saw Her Standing There was appropriate for a last song as a tribute to the great 60's/70's band. Even Hard Rock Hotel in Penang had mosaic of The Beatles all over the place and photos in almost all the hotel rooms.

Just as D'Kechewas was leaving the stage, the Media Prima gang screamed for more with their leader Dato' Amrin shouting "We want more,.. We want more.. " Somewhere at the back Pak Mus of Harian Metro was yelling "Jerat Kugiran,... Jerat Kugiran.. " with the rest of the crowd continuing their cheer for more of the band. Almost reluctantly, D'Kechewas went up the stage again and started whispering to each other.

The drums started rolling again and the keyboards and bass hit the C chord with Iesta going "Gadis idamanku.. hanya engkau yang satu.. hadirlah.. dalam mimpi-mimpi ku.. " The rest was history. People started to sing along espcecially at "Rozana... " Such a classic Malay rock by Search will always leave a stain in the hearts of audience aged 30 and above (like what we had that day) - a stain that makes them sing along the lyrics even when they thought they did not memorised it. Of course Azhar's guitar solo mimicking Hillary Ang's masterpiece intensified the screamings further.

It was a night to remember by the Media Prima gang especially D'Kechewas. As Iesta had put it "Media Prima made my dreams come true.. " in his Twitter. The only professional musician in the band, Ahmad Izham Omar, was actually nervous initially (having to perform on stage with a bunch of amatuers) but later commented "I'm glad I agreed to do this coz the sound in Hard Rock was much better than the Media Appreciation Night 2 nights ago.. " Azhar was more interested remembering how he had been the first to listen to Sheila Majid's demo tape and Eddy was finally satisfied with the feedback speakers surrounding his drums.
"; and Rozana chorus where Iesta gave me a short look in the eye with a read in between the lines "What the F U X are you doin mate!"). One thing's for sure, now we can say "I have performed at Hard Rock!!!"
